Location of Villa Thalassa

Villa Thalassa is close to the following towns and beaches. It is possible to walk from villa to Plaka village, and both beach resorts of Almyrtha and Kalives.

Plaka Village - The unspoilt village of Plaka is situated overlooking the sea and offers terrific views of both Souda Bay and the White Mountains. Plaka village square, where you can enjoy the village atmosphere, has some excellent tavernas, and is only a few minutes walk down the hill. Plaka provides 2 minimarkets to meet everyday requirements.

Almyrtha Beach - Blue Flag beach - the closest beach (within 10 minutes walking distance (downhill) is a more lively village than Kalives. It has a family atmosphere, as it has many beachfront Tavernas, kafenions and family snack bars.

Kalives - Is smaller than Almyrtha and is a fishing village, with a more traditional feel although it too has an excellent beach and beach front tavernas and also lively more traditional music evenings on the beach. Kalives also has a chemist, a butchers, 2 bakeries (making Tyropita and Spanakopita) cheese pies and spinach pies fresh every morning. Car and scooter hire through Flisvos (very good rates and reliable) are situated in Kalives High Street. The Greek church, in the centre of this village, is also worth a visit, and always has an open door.

Georgeopolos - A little further away (about 20 minutes drive), but totally different is the beach town of Georgeopolos, again with a lovely sandy beach but many more bars and cosmopolitan food and more hotels catering to UK tastes in both food and shops. But well worth a visit for a contrast to sleepy Greek.

Chania - Chania is part of the Apokoronas which is said to be Crete's most beautiful and exotic part - highly recommended as a day's outing, either by car or there is an excellent bus service to all towns and villages in the Chania area. Chania was once the capital of the island. Chania is famous for its ancient Venetian Harbour, which is very atmospheric both day and night. The harbour has many beautiful shops and a cobbled pedestrianised walking areas, where you can sit and drink, eat, or shop to your hearts desire. Excellent atmosphere for just sitting and relaxing and doing the most popular Greek pastime i.e. people watching.

Chania itself has many tiny narrow lanes and is reminiscent of the Kasbahs of Morocco with hidden shops full of treasures from clothes, leather goods, jewellery and local food delicacies such as Lookoomia (Turkish delight) and Baklava (traditional cakes).

Kokkino Chorio - 10 minutes drive inland - famous for filming of Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn. It also has a glass blowing factory which is always open and where excellent souvenirs can be bought. This village has 2 tavernas, where traditional Cretan food and live music nights are held regularly.

Details of Villa Thalassa

Interior - There is a spacious air conditioned living room with open kitchen on the ground floor, plus shower room with wc. The living room has two single sofabeds and coffee table, with TV and DVD player (with various dvds). There are double patio doors leading out of living room onto an uncovered patio area (overlooking the pool) with a sea view. Also an ideal viewpoint of pool (and children playing in pool). At other end of living room is the kitchen which is fully fitted with fridge freezer, oven and hood, microwave, toaster, washing machine, iron and board. There is also a small dining table and chairs in the kitchen for eating inside. Double patio doors lead out of kitchen onto a covered verandah (with sea views) and dining table and chairs.

The marble staircase leads to the large bathroom (with bath) and the two double bedrooms, one with double bed and one with two single beds. Both bedrooms have fitted double wardrobes. Both bedrooms have patio doors openining out onto a covered terrace - with fantastic views of Souda Bay across to the Akrotiri peninsula and towards Chania. Both bedrooms also have air conditioning and they also can provide heating during cold spells. The villa is bright and airy and has marble floors throughout, ideal for keeping cool, it is fully air conditioned (this is all included in the rental price).

Exterior - The entrance also has a covered veranda area with table and chairs for outside dining with a view of the sea where guests can dine and watch ships go by into Chania Harbour. The villa has a spacious gravelled garden to the front and side, with double patio doors leading out of the living room onto a patio area overlooking the large pool. The car park can also be seen from this patio area, to the side of the house.

The front veranda also overlooks a very large terraced area where there are sunloungers for exclusive use of my guests to sit by the pool. The pool is a separate area to the side of this larger terrace, it is shared by the three other villas to the front and below Villa Thalassa. They are all 3 privately owned as 2nd holiday homes - and so the pool is not often used.

Car Rental Information

FLISVOS car and motorbike rental - highly recommended!

I can highly recommend this particular office of the Flisvos group. Maria - who runs the office and speaks fluent English is extremely helpful and friendly.

When speaking to Maria - just mention me, she knows me as the half Greek half English Maria who is the new owner of Villa Thallassa in Plaka. She has assured me that she is only too happy to look after my visitors. She can arrange for a person to come and pick you up from and take you back to either Chania or Heraklion airport and drop you at the front door of Villa Thalassa. In 2007 we were paying (for 3 day rentals) about 20 euros a day. These rates get cheaper the longer the rental period. This is for the smaller car rental something like a new Panda.

Office: Almyrda, Chania - Tel: 0030 28250 31100
